Come to the Cross on Palm Sunday

It’s one of the two ordinances that God has ordained for the church to perform and remember the greatness of our God and His everlasting mercy.  They had gathered around a table in the upper room that night.  The conversation had been meaningful and the fellowship sweet … then Jesus pulls them together to instruct them on the coming events.

Judas was betraying Him and He was leading the eleven to a place that would be remembered and re-enacted millions upon millions of times.  He took the bread that was leftover from the meal and told them that this was His body.   The very body that in a few short hours would begin a process of torture that no person will ever be able to completely understand.  From the mocking, beating, whipping, and more — Christ body was given for those who would trust Him and through repentance find life more abundantly.  As often as you eat this bread do so in remembrance of Me.

Then He took the cup from the table that night.  He held it up and said this is the cup of the New Covenant.  The fruit of the vine in this cup was symbolic of His blood that would bring God’s chosen people into a right relationship with the Father.  He truly was the lamb of God to take away the sins of mankind.

This Sunday morning — Palm Sunday — we will gather to remember and honor the Lord Jesus Christ.

In preparation for Palm Sunday let’s read today 1 Corinthians 11:23-30 … 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: on the night when He was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, 24 gave thanks, broke it, and said,  “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”  25 In the same way He also took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood.  Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Self-Examination

27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 So a man should examine himself; in this way he should eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment k on himself. 30 This is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep.

Let me encourage you to take some time this weekend as you prepare to come to worship on the Lord’s Day to come to the table with clean hands and a pure heart.  See you Sunday as we gather to worship the Christ who went to the cross so that we might have the victory over sin and death.
